Sophie De Ronde: the Malt Guru of Burnt Mill
Head Brewer Sophie De Ronde is the brewing guru behind Burnt Mill’s beers of crazy balance. She started her career serving and brewing cask real ale, and then worked as the pilot brewer at craft maltster Muntons, leading craft brewers from around the world to experiment and learn about malt. That world class malt knowledge is what sets Burnt Mill beers apart from other hoppy new breweries.
Their beers always have balance and depth. Sophie knows that malt makes beer, even though amazingly she’s allergic to both wheat and barley! She learned about the allergy late in her brewing career, and now relies on her sense of aroma and color, and her brewing team’s sense of flavors and texture. Not surprisingly, in addition to the malt balance of their regular beers, their Steel Cut oatmeal Pale ale is the best gluten-free beer most of you will ever taste. Even Sophie can enjoy that one!! Obviously it’s working at Burnt Mill with the team, as Sophie was voted Brewer of the Year by the British Guild of Beer Writers in 2019. We are so grateful to have the balanced English beers of Burnt Mill and Sophie here in Japan!

​　ヘッドブルワーであるソフィー・ドゥ・ロンドは、Burnt Millの桁違いのバランスの裏にあるブリューイングの指導者です。ソフィーは英国伝統のカスク・リアルエールの提供と醸造からキャリアを始めました。その後クラフトモルトスター（製麦業者）のMuntonsでパイロットブルワーとして働き、世界中のブルワーを先導しモルトについて実験し学びました。その世界クラスのモルトの知識が、Burnt Millのビールとホップを効かせた新しいブルワリーと一線を画しているのです。
　彼らのビールには常にバランスと深さがあります。何とソフィーは麦にアレルギーがあるにも関わらず、 “モルトがビールを成す”ことを知っているのです！彼女はブリューイングの経歴の後半でアレルギーについて学びました。現在は、研ぎ澄まされた彼女の香りと色の感覚、そして醸造チームの味覚と舌ざわりを総合し造られています。グルテンアレルギーのあるソフィーも美味しく飲むことができる”Steel Cut Oatmeal Pale Ale”は、驚くまでもなく、ほとんどの人がこれまでに味わったことのない最高のグルテンフリービールです。ソフィーは2019年のBritish Guild of Beer Writersからイギリス全土No.1のブルーワー・オブ・ザ・イヤーにも選ばれ、その実力は明らかです。
