Most American craft breweries don’t bother making lagers. There are many reasons for this. First off, the craft beer movement started as a move towards more colorful, aromatic, and flavorful beers. Lager is still not a popular style for your average craft beer drinker. Lagers also take more time and cost more money to make, and finally they usually sell for less than more popular styles like IPAs. As usual, Epic is different from other breweries and they actually make 5 different lagers. One reason is that they love to make a wide variety of beers. The main reason, though, is that Dave loves lagers!

When Dave and I first met at the CBC in San Diego in 2012, after we agreed to work together we decided to celebrate and drink some beers. In the main hall of the CBC there are always buckets and buckets of hundreds of different beers for the members to choose from. After Dave and I spent some time trying a bunch of higher alcohol hoppy beers and barrel-aged beers, Dave finally said, “Albert, sometimes all you need is a lager. And right now? It’s fucking lager time!” And he reached into a bucket and pulled out a big bottle of hop syndrome! We laughed and split the bottle between us, and it was refreshing and perfect formwhat we needed then.

Hop Syndrome is Epic’s premium pilsner (lager), and they chose it to be their second canned beer after Escape to CO IPA. They chose a hoppy, premium pils-lager to differentiate it from macro-canned lagers, and thought it is the perfect beer to drink before or aftet IPA to set or re-set your palate and quench your thirst. It is very refreshing, but has plenty of earthy and fruity hop flavors to satisfy hop-loving craft beer drinkers.
